U=U AIDS 2018 was an incredibly rewarding and exciting experience. Check out below for resources, relevant news stories, and other items from #AIDS2018.
Below please find highlights: a video of a key moment from the week and a few excellent articles on Dr. Anthony Fauci's U=U preconference keynote and the PARTNER2 study: the risk is zero.
Dr. Alison Rodger, lead author of PARTNER2 on July 25, 2018 at the International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) in Amsterdam. (Video: 1 min. 13 secs)
Dr. Alison Rodger's response to HIV information providers who withhold U=U:
"The time for excuses is over. It is very, very clear that the risk is zero. If you are on suppressive ART you are sexually noninfectious."
"I just want to pay tribute to the U=U campaign, it's been astonishing."
People living with HIV whose virus is completely, durably suppressed by treatment will not sexually transmit the virus to an HIV-negative partner, according to NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. Read more at NIAID.
"If you're on suppressive ART, you are sexually noninfectious. The risk is zero," said Alison Rodger, MD, from University College London, here at the International AIDS Conference 2018. Read more at Medscape.
The chance of any HIV-positive person with an undetectable viral load transmitting the virus to a sexual partner is scientifically equivalent to zero, researchers confirmed at the 22nd International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2018) in Amsterdam today. Read more at NAM aidsmap.
Matthew Hodson, the Executive Director of NAM aidsmap, the HIV/AIDS information resource, remarked to A&U, “IAS2018 will be remembered as the conference when ‘U Equals U’ moved from being an activist rallying cry to the scientifically established position. HIV stigma remains a public health crisis resulting, in extreme cases, in murder and suicide. It should be a public health duty to inform all of us who are living with the virus, and all of those whom we encounter, that effective HIV treatment prevents transmission. Read more at A&U.
"It is clear through the PARTNER clinical trials that the chance that people who are virally suppressed can transmit HIV is zero. Undetectable does equal untransmittable," Alison Rodger declared. Read more at TheBodypro.

The lives of people with HIV will never be the same. People worldwide are mobilizing to put an end to misinformation about HIV transmission by spreading the news that Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). With research confirming that people on effective HIV treatment cannot pass on the virus to sexual partners, U=U has the power to transform HIV prevention and care and liberate people from stigma and fear.
The U=U Pre-Conference brought global partners together for the first time to celebrate this message of freedom and hope. By learning about the latest science, messaging, and advocacy campaigns around the globe, participants gained the tools to put these groundbreaking facts into action in their own communities.
The movement has grown to over 750 organizations from nearly 100 countries! Together we will rewrite the HIV risk narrative and break the barriers that have held back people with HIV for too long.
